Data scope: The Training.gov.au (TGA) national register covers all RTOs currently or previously approved to deliver nationally recognised training in Australia. SVH's tga_register dataset tracks: RTO code, legal name, trading names, status, status date, registration end date, address state, and website.
Before committing to a VET course in Australia, one of the most practical checks a prospective student can do is confirm the provider's TGA status — and understand that TGA registration is separate from CRICOS registration. This article explains what the published dataset records show.
What the register tracks
According to the published Training.gov.au register records (sourced into SVH's tga_register dataset, refreshed 12 September 2026), each RTO entry contains:

The two registers: TGA and CRICOS are not the same
This is the most common misunderstanding SVH encounters in the provider data. The TGA register and CRICOS are maintained by different agencies for different purposes:

A provider can be Active on TGA but not registered on CRICOS — which means they are not approved to enrol international students. An international student on a Subclass 500 visa must check both registers.
What "Active" status means — and when it matters
According to the published dataset records, an RTO's status field can show:
- Active — the RTO is currently registered and can deliver courses listed on its scope
- Cancelled — registration has been cancelled, usually by ASQA. The RTO cannot deliver new nationally recognised training. Students enrolled before the cancellation date may have protections — check with ASQA.
- Expired — the registration period lapsed without renewal
- Registration Withdrawn — the provider voluntarily withdrew from the register
For international students, Active status on TGA is a minimum condition — not a full clearance. An Active RTO whose CRICOS registration has separately lapsed cannot lawfully enrol new international students.
What the registration end date tells you
The registration end date in the dataset is the expiry date of the current TGA registration period. RTOs renew on a regular cycle set by ASQA.
If a provider's registration end date is within the next twelve months, ask the provider directly whether renewal is in progress and what their CRICOS status is. A provider with a near-term end date is not necessarily in trouble — but it is worth confirming their status before paying tuition.
How to check before you enrol
- Find your provider's RTO code — it should be on their website, student handbook, or any course documentation they give you.
- Search training.gov.au by RTO code or name. Confirm the status shows Active and the registration end date is in the future.
- Search cricos.education.gov.au for the same provider. Confirm they are listed there and that the specific course you intend to enrol in has a CRICOS course code.
- If either register shows anything other than Active, or the course is missing a CRICOS code, do not proceed without speaking to the provider and confirming their current authorisation with ASQA.

What the register does not tell you
TGA registration confirms a provider is authorised to deliver nationally recognised training. It does not confirm course quality, graduate outcomes, employment rates, or whether the provider is currently under audit. ASQA publishes regulatory decisions separately.
