Questions students ask

Answered from the 1,935 records currently on this page.

Starting out — choosing your first course

If you are applying from outside Australia.

What will the whole thing actually cost me?
Across the 1,935 courses on this page the middle recorded figure is A$84,000 for the whole course, not per year — and it is a guide, not a quote. Half sit below it and half above, and the spread is enormous. Tuition is also only part of what you will spend: living costs are separate, run for the whole time you are here, and are usually larger than the gap between two courses you are choosing between.
Diploma, bachelor or masters — what actually changes?
Time and money, mostly. The comparison above this list shows each level side by side: a diploma typically runs about a year, a bachelor about four, and the recorded fees differ by a factor of five. A higher level is not automatically the better choice — it is a longer commitment at a higher cost with harder entry requirements, and the register does not publish those requirements. Work out which level you can get into and afford, then compare courses inside it.
Why does the same course cost different amounts at different colleges?
Because each college sets its own fee and enters its own figure on the register. A single widely-taught qualification can show a few thousand dollars at one provider and forty thousand at another, which is why the cards here show a range rather than one number. The range is a reason to look at several colleges, not a sign that something is wrong — and none of those figures is a quote.
How long will I be here?
The middle figure is 2 years. Length matters more than it looks: a longer course costs more in living expenses even when its tuition is lower, so a cheap course that runs an extra year is not always the cheaper option.
If a course is on this page, am I in?
No — and the distinction matters. Everything here is registered, meaning the government has approved that provider to teach international students that course. That is not an offer, and it is not a visa. Entry requirements, English levels, intake dates and places available are set by the college and are not published on the register, so ask them directly. For anything to do with a visa, speak to a registered migration agent; every one holds a number issued by the Migration Agents Registration Authority.

Already in Australia — changing course or planning ahead

If you are here on a student visa now.

I'm already studying here and want to change course. Where do I start?
Start with what is actually available: use the filters to find which providers teach the course you want, in your city, at what recorded fee. That is the part this page can answer properly. Whether you are permitted to transfer is a separate question that depends on how far into your course you are and what your provider's release policy says — we have written up how that process works on our changing courses page. Confirm your own position with your provider, and take anything visa-related to a registered migration agent.
I want to study something on a skilled occupation list. How do I find it?
The Australian Government publishes lists of occupations it considers to be in demand, and you can browse them on our skilled occupations page. Read them for what they are: a list is a published fact about that occupation on that date, not a prediction about any individual, and the lists change. This page will show you courses in a field — it does not claim that finishing one leads to a job, a nomination or a visa, because the register says nothing about that. Pro maps courses to occupations and the lists they appear on.
Which states are asking for which skills?
Each state and territory runs its own nomination arrangements and publishes its own occupation lists, and they differ from each other and from the national lists. Our state nomination page covers how those work and what each state has published. It is worth knowing before you commit to a city, because where you study and where you might later want to live are separate decisions that people often make as one. Pro shows which state lists include a given occupation.
I'm close to finishing. What does this page tell me about what comes next?
Honestly, nothing — this is a register of courses, not a guide to what follows one. What happens after you graduate, including the temporary graduate visa and the points system, is covered on our after graduation page. Your own circumstances are a question for a registered migration agent.

About this data

Where the numbers come from and what they do not cover.

Where does this data come from, and how current is it?
Every course here is a record from the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students, kept by the Australian Government Department of Education — the legal list of what a provider may teach international students. It is published under Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 Australia and we republish it as recorded. It is authoritative for registration, provider and course code. It is not authoritative for what a college charges today, which is the one figure worth confirming directly.
Why do some courses show no price?
1 of the 1,935 courses here have no fee recorded against them in the register. We show that as not recorded and leave them out of the figures rather than guessing or counting them as free. A missing number is reported as missing.
How wide is the price range?
The fees recorded for the courses on this page run from under A$10,000 upwards in total. StudyVisaHub does not grade colleges on price or award dollar-sign ratings, because scoring a college is not the same as reporting what it recorded. Read the figure as a guide, and confirm it with the college.
