Study in Gold Coast: International Student Guide

A practical guide to universities, costs, visa requirements, and student life on the Gold Coast.

Why Study on the Gold Coast?

The Gold Coast is a coastal city in South East Queensland with a population of approximately 750,000 (ABS), making it one of Australia's largest non-capital cities. Located 75 kilometres south of Brisbane on the Pacific coast, the Gold Coast is known for its 57 kilometres of surf beaches, a subtropical climate, and a tourism and hospitality economy that creates substantial student employment opportunities.

The Gold Coast has three universities with campus presence. Bond University in Robina is Australia's first private, not-for-profit university and offers a trimester-based schedule that allows students to complete degrees on an accelerated timeline. Griffith University's Gold Coast campus in Southport is part of a large multi-campus network with strengths in health, business, law, environment, and the arts. Southern Cross University operates a Gold Coast campus at Bilinga near the airport, with programs in health, business, education, and environmental sciences.

The Gold Coast's economy is anchored by tourism, hospitality, construction, retail, and healthcare. Major infrastructure investment has accompanied the city's rapid population growth, and the region is part of the broader South East Queensland development corridor that also encompasses Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. The Gold Coast Light Rail (G:link) connects the city's university precincts and beaches to the heavy rail interchange at Helensvale, from where Brisbane is accessible by train.

For international students, the Gold Coast offers a distinctive lifestyle environment — coastal, warm, and with a significant international student community — alongside access to the broader South East Queensland study network. Students enrolled at Gold Coast institutions are part of Queensland's higher education ecosystem and have access to the state's skilled migration nomination programs upon graduating.

Students also explore studying in Brisbane, Perth, or Hobart — cities with different study and lifestyle profiles.

Universities and TAFE on the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast has three universities with established campus infrastructure and Queensland's public TAFE provider. All registered CRICOS providers are authorised to enrol international students holding a valid Subclass 500 student visa.

Bond University

CRICOS 00017B — Private not-for-profit university

Bond University is Australia's first private, not-for-profit university, established in 1989 and located in Robina. Bond operates on a trimester-based academic calendar, enabling students to complete a standard three-year undergraduate degree in approximately two years. The university is known for law, business, film and television, information technology, health sciences, and psychology. Its smaller student body relative to public universities is a characteristic many students note when selecting Bond. Tuition fees are higher than public institutions.

Griffith University — Gold Coast campus

CRICOS 00233E — Public multi-campus university

Griffith University's Gold Coast campus is located at Southport and is served by the G:link light rail. Griffith offers programs across business, criminology, education, engineering, health sciences, law, environmental science, tourism, and the arts. The Gold Coast campus provides access to the full Griffith program portfolio, with some specialisations available at the Brisbane campuses. The university has a significant international student cohort across its Gold Coast and Brisbane locations.

Southern Cross University — Gold Coast campus

CRICOS 01241G — Public regional university

Southern Cross University (SCU) operates a Gold Coast campus at Bilinga, near the Gold Coast Airport. SCU offers programs in health, nursing, business, education, law, and environmental sciences. The university has campuses across Northern NSW and South East QLD. SCU's health programs, including nursing, have clinical placement arrangements with Queensland Health facilities on the Gold Coast.

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast

CRICOS 03020E — Public TAFE provider

TAFE Queensland operates Gold Coast campuses including Coomera and Southport. Programs span trades, technology, business, hospitality, tourism, community services, and health at Certificate, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma levels. The Coomera campus has trade facilities, while Southport is more closely linked to the city's hospitality and business sectors.

Verify current CRICOS registration and course availability with providers before applying. CRICOS details are publicly searchable at Study Australia.

Cost of Living on the Gold Coast

Gold Coast living costs are broadly comparable to Brisbane. Accommodation costs vary with suburb and proximity to beaches or university campuses. The figures below are indicative — actual costs depend on accommodation type and lifestyle, and do not include university fees or OSHC.

ExpenseEstimated monthly cost
Shared accommodation$1,000 – $1,700
G:link / Translink go card (bus/tram/train)$80 – $140
Groceries and meals$220 – $340

Total estimated weekly spend is approximately $390–$540. Students who travel frequently to Brisbane for study or work should factor in the additional transport cost of the South East QLD rail fare. On-campus accommodation is available at Griffith Gold Coast and Bond University for students who prefer a residential option.

Student Visa for the Gold Coast

International students studying on the Gold Coast — like all international students in Australia — must hold a valid Subclass 500 Student Visa issued by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). There is no Gold Coast-specific student visa — the Subclass 500 applies regardless of which Australian city you study in.

To apply for a Subclass 500 visa, you will generally need a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from a registered CRICOS provider, evidence of sufficient financial capacity, English language proficiency, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), and meeting genuine temporary entrant requirements.

Visa requirements, processing times, and evidence expectations change periodically. Always verify current requirements directly with the Department of Home Affairs before applying.

Lifestyle and Transport on the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast has a subtropical climate with warm, sunny weather throughout most of the year. Summer (December–February) brings temperatures of 26–30°C with moderate humidity and occasional afternoon storms. Winter (June–August) is mild and dry, with daytime temperatures of 11–21°C and abundant sunshine. The city records high annual sunshine hours, and the coastal sea breeze moderates summer temperatures in beach-facing suburbs. Students from cold climates consistently cite the Gold Coast winter as a standout lifestyle feature.

The Gold Coast's 57 kilometres of surf beaches — including Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Burleigh Heads, and Coolangatta — are accessible by G:link light rail or bus from most study areas. Surfing, beach volleyball, running paths, and outdoor sports infrastructure are integrated into daily life for many students. Hinterland destinations including Tamborine Mountain and Lamington National Park are accessible by car or tour.

Public transport on the Gold Coast is managed by Translink and includes the G:link light rail (running from Helensvale to Broadbeach South, serving Griffith Gold Coast campus at Parkwood/Griffith station and Southport), an extensive bus network, and the South East QLD train connection to Brisbane at Helensvale and Robina stations. A go card provides discounted fares across all Translink services including Brisbane trains. Rideshare and cycling are widely used for shorter journeys.

The Gold Coast's hospitality, tourism, retail, and construction sectors create significant part-time employment for students. Major theme parks (Dreamworld, Sea World, Warner Bros. Movie World) and the hotel and events industry employ students in operational, service, and customer-facing roles. The healthcare sector is expanding as population growth drives demand for medical and aged-care services.

International students on a Subclass 500 visa may work up to 48 hours per fortnight while enrolled (standard condition 8105). Unlimited hours are permitted during scheduled course breaks. For eligible graduates, Queensland's state nomination programs for the Subclass 190 and Subclass 491 visas provide post-study Career Pathway options — current occupation lists are published on the Queensland Government's official migration pages.
